The Chabad Chai of South Tampa will not only serve as a Jewish facility, but as a community cultural center as well. It will house lounge-type spaces for people to congregate including balconies on levels two and three along with a rooftop garden space. It will house a myriad of events including but not limited to: Kosher meals (via Dina’s Kitchen), Hebrew Academy, Chabad Young Professionals (CYP), adult education, Chai crafts, Ladies of Life, Camp Gan Israel, and Chai Shul The cantilevered stairs on the corners of the building lead to the rooftop garden and are contiguous all the way to ground level. The stairs weave in and out of varied levels of enclosed exterior space to offer people an interesting architectural procession throughout the building. This project is assured to be a Tampa landmark in that it lies within the West Overlay Design District which is governed by strict Mediterranean-styled architecture. While this building clearly pays homage to Mediterranean architecture, it also has a four story glass elevator which hints at modern influences. This dichotomy of bringing together the old and the new was inspired by the work that the Chabad does its Jewish constituency.
This project will have a spiritual connection to the 80,000+ sf Jewish Community Center (Bryan Glazer Family JCC) across the street.
